Fashion Tips for Petite Women!

Like Me! I'm only 5 foot 2" and not all styles look great when you're short :( Here are some tips for those of us that need a little guide to lead us on the right fashion track!

Avoid Chopping your Body in Half

One of the most important criteria is to learn how NOT to cut your body in half. You need to create a sleeker, single-body look and this means shopping smarter. The golden rule is less width and more height!
One trick that can add the illusion of a few extra inches is by going for a single-color on both your top and bottom half.

Avoid mixing colors and prints if you don’t want to cut your silhouette in two. Monochromes are your best friend when it comes to elongating your figure as dark colors serve to give you a sleeker look

Be Careful with Belts

Belts are a real danger area for short women. If you wear it around your waistline this simply cuts your body in two. This season’s style is to wear it just under the bust-line (empire-line), or wear it lower down on your hips. The size of the buckle, width of the belt will also play an important part in creating an overall effect.

Wearing Stripes and Patterns

Shorter, style-savvy women have learnt to avoid horizontal stripes. Vertical stripes serve to make your silhouette look longer, even a single vertical line (e.g on a swimsuit, top or skirt) works like a charm. Diagonal stripes can have a similar effect. Look for dresses with vertical lines rather than horizontal ones, you’ll be surprised what a difference it makes to your height.
The same applies to patterns and prints. Avoid wide patterns, small prints and big florals. Go for vertical-style prints such as a long paisley swirls or flowers with stalks, accending down the garment.

Footwear is Key

Footwear is critical when you are petite. A sweeping generalization would be, for the most part, to go for the highest heel you can bear, whilst still feeling comfortable. Not only does this give the illusion of height, but improves your posture, throwing you body slightly forward when you walk.  A high-heel shoes elongates the legs and give the impression of thinner ankles, providing you don’t wear ankle straps (which tend to thicken the leg). A higher heel makes you feel taller, boosts your confidence and improves your posture.
If you don’t feel secure teetering about in stilettos, then wedge-heels are easier to walk on and will still give you the necessary height, but choose a delicate-looking pair, rather than overtly chunky.
When wearing flat heels, a more pointed toe will give you more height than a rounded one. This year’s trendy ballet flats with chunky rounder/squared toes need to be worn with care, if you are going for an overall, head-to-toe, lanky look.

Trousers, Skirts and Dresses

Tapered legs do no-one any favors, especially short legs; and skinny-jeans will work with high-heels but not flats. Your trouser length is critical as it can either make or break the illusion of height. Avoid wearing pants which sit above the shoe, or those who swamp them. Look for length, whereby the hem covered most of your shoe, but does not touch the floor.
When it comes to jeans, boot cuts and slight flares will make you appear taller. This season’s wide-legged, fluid pants can swamp your figure unless you get the length right and choose a style that is close-fitting. The more diaphanous the garment the shorter you’ll look! Forget oversized if you are short and go for something better-fitting.
Contrary to what you may believe, longer length skirts will not give the illusion of the extra height you crave. A skirt which sits just above the knee is the most flattering. Alternatively wearing a sleek-cut maxi dress (not a maxi-skirt with volume) with a pair of high-heels, will have an elongating effect, providing the dress is of a slimming color or print.

Get rid of stretch marks using sun tan lotion!

Stretch marks occur due to rapid weight gain or growth spurts. The stretching of the skin causes it to become strained, resulting in bumpy pink, red, or white lines. Stretch marks usually occur on the thighs and stomach, although weightlifters can get stretch marks on their arms. Pregnant women often have stretch marks at their pregnancy's end. Surgery or laser treatment is the only way to completely remove stretch marks, although they generally fade over time. Applying suntan lotion to the marks is a way to make them fade faster

things you'll need:

  • Body scrub
  • Clean towel
  • Body lotion
  • Suntan lotion with cocoa butter
Intructions:
1. Choose a suntan lotion that contains cocoa butter oil. Suntan lotions generally contain cocoa butter, jojoba, or coconut oil to keep skin hydrated while in the drying sun. Cocoa butter oil is an excellent moisturizer with natural healing properties and is a common ingredient in stretch mark creams and other forms of skin treatment.

2. Use a body scrub over the affected areas while showering. This will rid the skin of any dead cells that will interfere with its absorption of the suntan lotion. Pat skin dry after showering with a clean towel.

3. Rub body lotion into stretch marks, as suntan lotion works much faster on hydrated skin. Try picking a lotion that contains aloe vera as it is deeply hydrating with extensive healing properties. Allow to soak in.

4. Massage suntan lotion into stretch marks in a circular motion. Repeat daily to lessen the appearance of stretch marks.

How to do a side braid!

Celebrities like Lauren Conrad popularized the side crown braid, sometimes referred to as the side French braid or headband braid. The side crown braid starts diagonally from your eyebrow and curves along the side of your head before tucking into the nape of your neck.

things you'll need:

  • Fine tooth comb
  • 2 small non-rubber hair elastic
  • Table or handheld mirror
Instructions:
Part your hair on the side opposite of where you want your braid. A few inches to the left or right of your center scalp works best. If you're right handed, braid on the right side of your scalp. Braiding your side crown braid on your dominant side is easier to execute.

Draw a second vertical part with your comb approximately 2 inches deep from your hairline beginning at your first side part and ending near the nape of your neck. The deeper the part, the thicker the braid.

Pull the remainder of your hair not included in this front section of hair into a secure ponytail so it doesn't interfere with your braiding. Use your table mirror and examine the back of your head. Your hair for the side crown braid must be neatly parted and easily definable

Divide your hair into three separate parts A, B and C beginning at the side part near your forehead. Overlap A with B, and B with C.

Pull the pleats snug and draw a small strand of hair from the side closest to your ponytail using the pointer finger and thumb of your dominant hand. Include this strand into part A and overlap it with part C. Bring an equal size strand from the side closest to your forehead using your non-dominant pointer finger and thumb and include it with strand C. Overlap this entire new section with strand B.

Continue this process down and around your head including strands of the same size to ensure uniform pleats and an even braid. Stop drawing hair from the side and begin braiding down and away from your head when you reach the nape of your neck. Tie a non-elastic hair band around your side braid when only three or four inches of hair remains unbraided.

Take down your ponytail. Next to the beginning of your braid, brush a 2-inch deep section of hair.
Hold the brushed hair firmly in your non-dominant hand and flip your head upside down so you have clear access to the nape of your neck

Pull this last brushed section to the nape of your neck and combine it with your side crown braid in your non-dominant hand. Keep your head flipped upside down and tie a non-rubber hair elastic around the braid and brushed section. Flip your head right-side up and enjoy your new look.

Wax your eyebrows?

Have you ever tried waxing your eyebrows and accidentally ripped half of it off?? Well no I haven't ever done that but I mean it COULD happen right? If you're not careful. Waxing eyebrows can be very tricky because you have to be so precise. Stylists recommends tweezing the area instead. While you're waiting for the hair to grow back, sweep a bit of brow-colored eyeshadow over the bald spot.

To be honest, i've never waxed my eyebrows because they are so thick i'm afraid i'll actually go too thin and end up looking scary :S Tweezing has always worked best for me. What about you?

Hair Tip! The Correct Way to Dry your hair

Remember to pat your hair dry with a towel and do not put a towel on top of your head and rub your hair dry -it can break your hair strains and cause excess hairloss. Tell your man this if he is concerned about hair loss because men tend to dry their hair like this a lot.

Additional Hair-drying tips:

Avoid leaving the blowdryer in one spot for more than a few seconds, keep it moving it around and keep it a good distance away from your hair.

Tips on avoiding late night eating

Does this sound like you? You inhale a light yogurt for lunch and eat hardly anything all day so by the end of the day you are so hungry that all your discipline goes out the window. You have a night eating habit and are someone who uses food not as fuel but as an antidote to stress.
There are two troubling behaviors that come into play with night eating and those are mindless consumption and lack of portion control. This can make trying to lose weight extremely difficult and can also increase the likelihood of obesity.

Why do we eat at night?

Many women eat late at night because that is the only time of day that they get in any peace and carbohydrates offer stress relief because they raise the level of serotonin, the good mood chemical in the brain that makes us feel at ease. Other diet minded women eat very little during the day thinking their self -discipline will carry them through the evening, only to have the strategy backfire. Going for long period restricting food makes it harder to eat reasonable when you begin to eat.

Tips to stop night eating?

Don't starve all day. Make sure to eat breakfast, lunch and snacks so you are not ravenous in the evening. Curb your appetite- Try a drink that nutritionist call Citrus Chill which is a squeeze or lemon and lime and some artificial sweeter over crushed ice. Try on of these before dinner and after dinner.
Set a clear food cut off time - Try brushing your teeth at 7:30 pm and designate that as your food cut off time. This is hard at first but gets easier over time.

Thanks to jackiemarie and team for sharing these tips!

How to make a messy chignon!

The modern bun, or chignon, is a favorite hairstyle among fashionable women. It's surprisingly quick and easy, and it's sure to win you a few admiring glances from men and women alike. If you have at least semi-long hair this will be easier to do

Items:
  • Hair Pins, Headband, Hair Sticks
  • Hairbrush
  • Hair Spray, Hair Mousse
  • Anti-frizz Hair Serum
Directions:
1. Begin with clean, dry, tangle-free hair. You may opt to blow curly or wavy hair straight for a smoother look. Work a little mousse through your hair and tame any flyaway hair with a drop of anti-frizz serum before starting your chignon.

2. Brush your hair back into a low ponytail. Shorter side layers can be pinned back with jeweled hair pins or a head band. Get a firm grip around the base of the ponytail and use your other hand to twist the tail into a tight spiral.

3. Hold the base of the ponytail with one hand, then lift the tail straight up with the other. Begin to coil it clockwise around the base. When you've made half of a circle, release the hand holding the base and use it to hold the forming bun as you continue to coil the tail of the chignon.

4. Complete one rotation - a little more if you have longer hair - then tuck the end of the tail under the chignon. If your hair is long enough, you might be able to push the tail through the bun and make a knot.

5. Secure the chignon using a few prong-shaped bobby pins or a hair stick. Push one pin through at any outside edge, collecting a small amount of the bun as you make the insertion. Secure the opposite side with a second pin. If you're using a hair stick, push the tip up through the right corner of your chignon, so that a thin flat layer rests on top of the stick. Rotate the stick 180 degrees and push it gently through the base of the bun. As the stick begins to emerge, hook a small amount of hair on the underside of the left corner, then center the stick.

You're done!

    Barbados!

Hey guys! Just came back from my fantastic Barbados vacay and it was so awesome! The food was so great and the people were super friendly as always :) The only problem I had was the shopping! Barbados has A LOT of duty free shopping. BUT I did some comparisons and I realize that duty free prices in Trinidad is way better than the duty free in barbados. I bought all my perfume gift sets in Dufry Trinidad cuz they were at least $5US cheaper. However, barbados wins for the wider selection that they have. I really wanted to get the new Paris Hilton Tease Me perfume and they had it in duty free barbados and none in trinidad :( I was so bummed.
Anyway! Now that i'm back, i'm gonna start back posting! :D

    Hmm..Did you know?

Apple Cider Vinegar is used as an acidic rinse. An acidic rinse is so wonderful for your hair in many ways: It restores the natural PH balance of your hair and to close the cuticle ( great to use after chemical services such as hair coloring or perms). Since it closes the hair cuticles, this creates smoother, shiner hair. Apple Cider Vinegar also removes shampoo, conditioner and styling product buildup on the scalp or hair shaft, going one step further than regular shampoo. It also kills bacteria that causes dandruff, itchy scalp and has been known for an effective lice treatment. Regular Vinegar does all the same as above! So why not give it a try and see if it works for you! :)

Make your own skinny jeans out of loose ones!

Skinny jeans are an expensive, yet fashionable addition to any closet. Skinny jeans are form-fitting jeans that have a snug or tight fit all the way down the leg, with narrow leg openings for the feet. Skinny jeans can narrow your silhouette, giving you a slimmer, taller appearance. You can avoid the high cost of skinny jeans by altering a pair of baggy or loose-fitting jeans you have in your closet.

    Things you need:
    • Loose pair of Jeans
    • 20-30 Safety pins
    • 20-30 Sewing pins
    • Sewing machine or sewing needle
    • Thread
    • Scissors

    Directions:
    1. Pull your loose jeans inside-out and wear them. You will sew them on the inside to hide the stitching. Sit down on the floor while wearing your jeans inside-out. Spread your legs apart. Pull the loose fabric on the inside of your leg away from your leg.

    2. Pin the fabric of the jeans with safety pins beginning from the crotch and running down to the ankles. You will need 20 to 30 safety pins depending on your height. The line of pins should taper towards the ankles by at least 1 1/2 inches to allow enough room for you to get your feet through the leg holes.

    3. Remove your jeans and replace the safety pins with the same number of sewing pins. Replace the pins one at a time to avoid losing your place.

    4. Sew inside the lines of pins using thread and a sewing needle or a sewing machine. Make sure that you sew the lines very tightly. Double-sew the seams to make sure they don't come undone from use.

    5. Put on the pants to make sure they have the desired fit, and that there is not a problem with the sewing. If the sewing and fit are fine, take off the pants. Take a pair of scissors and cut off the excess denim in the seams you have just sewed together.
Now you have homemade skinny jeans tailored to your body and you've saved yourself money!

    Home-made Milk Bath

A day at the spa includes luxurious personal treatments from head to toe with facials, massages, and milk baths. Along with the pampering comes a hefty price. The more practical approach involves spending the day at home basking in the luxury of the same treatments at a fraction of the cost.

The milk bath helps relieve dry skin, making it soft and supple. Other reasons for creating a personal recipe for homemade milk baths include gift giving, stress relief, or simple relief from skin irritation. Ground oatmeal added to the recipe works well on sunburned skin and rashes. Sometimes the best thing about a homemade milk bath is being able to relax and enjoy a little "me" time.

    Ingredients for Milk Baths

    • Milk is obviously the key ingredient in a milk bath, and the powdered form works best in homemade recipes. Powdered milk mixed in a 3-2-1 ratio with epsom salts and cornstarch provides a rich, luxurious effect.
Mix the ingredients together with a blender or food processor to make a pourable powder. Other recipes for homemade milk baths substitute baking soda for epsom salts and cut down or eliminate the cornstarch.
For extra aromatherapy relaxation, add soothing scents to a homemade milk bath. Blend fresh or dried lavender with the main ingredients to create a soothing ambiance in the bath. Or grind almonds in a blender or food processor until they form a powder, and mix with the main ingredients. Other choices for fragrance come in the form of essential oils. Choose oils in your favorite scents and blend with the dry powder to create an intoxicating aroma when pampering yourself with a milk bath.

Bleach hair naturally using Lemon Juice!

If you are looking to get a light, "been in the sun all summer" sort of look, lemon juice will do the trick. Contrary to popular belief, lemon juice isn't harmful to hair, as the pH is very close to the natural pH of your hair. So get out your bottle of lemon juice and enjoy some summer highlights

    Ingredients:
    • 1 bag chamomile tea
    • 2 tsp sea salt
    • 1 cup lemon juice
    • Container to catch run off
    • Shampoo and conditioner

    Instructions:
Boil a pot of water and then pour 1 cup of water over a chamomile tea bag. The chamomile helps to bleach your hair slightly while retaining a natural color and protecting your locks from damage. Additionally, chamomile smells great and leaves your hair silky soft.

Allow the chamomile tea to cool to a comfortable temperature. In the meantime, combine 2 tsp. of sea salt, 1 cup of water and 1 cup of lemon juice and stir until the salt dissolves. Mix the tea with the salt water and lemon juice.

  • Pour the mixture onto dry hair, catching the run off in a container and repeating until your hair is fully saturated. Squeeze any excess out of your hair and then sit out in the sun until your hair dries.

  • Check your hair in the mirror and repeat your lemon juice bleach treatment if desired. Once you reach a nice color, wash and condition your hair as usual.

    1. Apply mascara to your upper lashes first. Mascara thickens lashes and creates a barrier so the liquid liner won't run into eyes.

    2. Gently lift your skin at the outer corner of your eye with your index finger to pull your eyelid taut. Use a hands-free magnified mirror to get a close view of the eye area.

    3. Draw a line from the midpoint of the eye to the outer corner with the tip of the liquid eyeliner. If you are going for a cat eye look, extend the line just beyond the outer corner.

    4. Draw a line from the inner corner of your eye to meet the line at the midpoint. Applying the line as two short lines gives you greater control. But if this is still too difficult, apply it as three or more short lines that meet up, creating one long line from the inner to the outer corner of the upper lid

    5. Place a small amount of eye makeup remover on a cotton swab and dab any messy areas to make the line neat and straight

    How to wear Flats!

Whether you're tall and looking for shoes that won't add extra height or you simply want easy-to-wear shoes, flats are a great option. Originally inspired by flat ballerina shoes, flats now come in athletic styles, shiny leather fabrics and glittery evening designs, to name a few. Versatile and comfortable, flats add style to any outfit. Here are a few tips for wearing your flats with a number of outfits.

    1. Wear your flats with shorts or cropped pants. One of the easiest ways to wear flats is with summer outfits and during warmer weather. Pair black flats with khaki-colored cropped pants and a nice blouse for a polished look. Sporty flats will make a shorts ensemble look more laid-back, while ballet flats can be elegant.

    2. Pair your jeans with flats. Most jean styles look great with flats, which are a nice alternative to athletic shoes and boots. Be careful wearing wide-leg jeans with ballet flats, however, because they could cover the top of the shoes and make your feet disappear. Skinny jeans look nice with gold flats and sporty flats, and straight-leg jeans look fantastic with brown flats and other earthy colors. When wearing jeans with flats, make sure that the hem is not too long; you want to show off your pretty shoes, and you don't want to trip.

    3. Put on flats with a dress. Sundresses and casual dresses that hit just above the knee look nice with flats, and they can also benefit from flats with a small heel, which elongates the legs. Wear brown flats with earthy colors and black flats with bright colors or with white and black. You can also wear flats with a long, Bohemian-style skirt for a casual look. Wear shiny gold flats with a short black dress for an unexpected evening look.

    4. Try leggings with flats. Dancers made the leggings-and-flats look popular, but you can pull off this style regardless of your dance skills. Wear leggings under a long tunic or a skirt or layer a knit dress over your leggings. To achieve the most slimming look, wear black leggings with matching black flats. You can also wear colorful flats for a funkier look.
